The Other 1%

Background before reading this post: You know that saying, "So this is how the other half lives?" Well, I might have called this post something along those lines. But since I am married to a social scientist, we did a little online research and found that 40% of the wealth in the US is controlled by 1% of the people. So really, that saying is way off.

This weekend, we got to see how the other 1% lives. We decided to take advantage of the bad economy (read reduced rates) and spend the weekend at the Hotel Del Coronado for Scott's 40th birthday. My wonderful mom picked up the kids on Friday, and we came down for a little alone time. We've had a wonderful weekend, including a play at Lamb's Players Theatre, sushi on Friday and dinner at Ruth's Chris last night, and some long walks on the beach. It was a BEAUTIFUL weekend on the coast (until this morning, when the gray stayed) and we even got to see the whale that's been hanging out in San Diego Bay while we watched the sun set yesterday.

That said, we're a little surprised at what rich people are willing to pay for not-so-great service. The Del is beautiful, for sure, and just the historic place to take a social scientist to celebrate his big day. However, the bed was like sleeping on a piece of plywood (my back is still trying to recover from last night-it takes about an hour), I was hung up on twice and misdirected twice while trying to check on boat rentals, and there was a huge party that went on for about 30 minutes before Scott called the front desk and they came to break it up at 1:30 this morning. The bathroom could be cleaner, too, but maybe I'm just a snob about that.

We've decided that it would be more budget-wise to just come hang out with the other 1%, and then go home and sleep in our own, very comfortable bed.
