Murphy's Law

Caleb's godparents came out to watch his game yesterday. The plan was to do that and then go to the pumpkin patch. City Farmers was having their fall festival, so we wanted to go support them and let the kids have some fun.

Godparents have new twin baby boys, so they didn't quite get a chance to eat lunch before they came to the game (which started at 1:00). When it was over, we went to the burger place to eat. By the time we were done, it was 3:30. The festival was supposed to be over by 4:00, but we figured we'd just hang out for a bit afterward. We dropped off one of the cars at our house and left for the nursery.

About a mile from our house, Caleb screamed.

Scott: What's wrong?
Caleb: [holding his nose] Ouch, ouch!
Scott: Let me see.
Caleb: [pulls his hands away to see they are covered in blood] Oh no!
Scott: Hold on!
Nikki: [general freaking out that triggers crying from Caleb]

Caleb had whacked himself in the face with his water bottle in precisely the spot that causes blood to spurt from the nose. I pulled over, we grabbed a towel from the back, and told Godparents we needed to go back to the house.

After we got things settled down back at the house, we had a hard time getting motivated to move. The boys went outside to check on construction. The five-year-olds went to ride bikes. The rest of us contemplated napping right along with the sleeping babies on our laps.

Finally, a decision had to be made. At first we talked about going to a pumpkin patch in Lakeside, but it closed at 7:00. We ultimately decided to go to the very commercial pumpkin patch off the 15 that we've gone to for the past five years. We got everyone loaded up, drove to Poway, and found the lot fenced off with nothing but some Con-Ex boxes on it.

Plan D wound up being Cold Stone on Pomerado Road. Fortunately, there was a Target right next door with, glory of glories, pumpkins in the garden center. So we got to enjoy ice cream with not only the godparents, but my parents as well. We were home by 7:30 and had the kids in bed by 8:30. And we have pumpkins. YAY!
